Did You Know?

Cryptograms Have Been Used for Thousands of Years

Simple substitution ciphers—the type used in most cryptogram puzzles—date back more than 2,000 years and were used to send secret messages.

Cryptography Helped Win Wars

During World War II, codebreakers successfully cracked enemy ciphers, helping the Allies gain critical intelligence and shorten the war.

Every Cryptogram Can Be Solved with Logic

You don’t need to guess. By looking for common letters, repeated patterns, and short words, every cryptogram can be decoded step by step.

Famous Quotes Make Great Cryptograms

Many cryptogram puzzles use quotations from authors, inventors, scientists, and historical figures, making them a fun way to discover memorable words of wisdom.

Puzzle Tips

New to Cryptograms or looking to crack codes faster? These proven decoding strategies will help you solve puzzles with greater confidence and accuracy.

Start With Short Words

One-, two-, and three-letter words are often the easiest to identify. Common words such as A, I, AN, IN, IS, IT, OF, and TO can provide valuable clues to the cipher.

Look for Common Word Endings

Patterns such as ING, ED, TION, ER, and LY appear frequently in English. Recognizing these endings can quickly reveal larger sections of the message.

Find the Most Common Letters

In English, letters such as E, T, A, O, I, and N appear most frequently. If a coded letter appears often throughout the puzzle, it may represent one of these common letters.

Use Logic, Not Guessing

Successful cryptogram solving is about deduction. Make letter substitutions only when the evidence supports them, and confirm they work throughout the entire puzzle.

Spot Repeating Letter Patterns

Double letters and repeated word patterns can reveal important clues. For example, a pair like XX might represent LL, EE, OO, or another commonly doubled letter.

Solve Several Words at Once

Every letter you decode can appear throughout the puzzle. Instead of focusing on a single word, look for places where newly discovered letters unlock multiple words at the same time.
